Be Truly Green -- Refuse to Use ChemLawn

Schools Not Doing Their Homework

In efforts to keep campuses green, schools fall short of goal

As many of us are heading back to school, we're trying to make sure the things we buy are more "green". We're buying more recycled paper or products without specific plastics. We're trying to do our part. However, one thing we can't control is the ground under our feet...or can we?

Across the country, college & high school students, as well as their parents and friends, are calling on TruGreen ChemLawn, the nation's largest lawn care provider, to stop using toxic pesticides on their campuses. Why?

Schools Not Doing Their Homework

TruGreen works on countless school campuses across the country applying a litany of toxic pesticides and fertilizers. Some of the campuses include:

Cranford Public Schools in New Jersey will spend over $25,000 in the next year to have TruGreen apply chemicals to their mostly elementary schools.

The University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT will work with TruGreen to apply pesticides that include MCPP and MCPA, possible carcinogens according to the US EPA, around athletic fields.

Clintondale Community Schools in Michigan just renewed their three-year contract with TruGreen, for fertilization and weed control using the company's toxic chemicals.

What Can You Do?

Take a moment and consider calling your local school, school district or college administration. Ask them if they use the services of TruGreen ChemLawn. If so, ask them to consider canceling their contract until the company offers a pesticide-free alternative.

If your school doesn't use TruGreen, ask them to consider making the campus pesticide-free. As always, feel free to email us with what you learn, or if you have questions and need help figuring out who to call.
